Most asked questions about becoming an au pair in the Netherlands

What are the rules to become an au pair in the Netherlands?
  • You are between 18-25 years old;
  • You are unmarried and have no children;
  • This is your first time going to the Netherlands as an au pair.
Do you need to speak the language in order to become an au pair in the Netherlands?

Au pairs in the Netherlands are entitled to attend a language course. The host family has to contribute 320 euros per year to the language course.

What do you earn as an au pair in the Netherlands?

Au pairs receive between 300 and 340 euros per month in the Netherlands.

What are your au pair responsibilities?

The work of an au pair in Holland mainly consists of taking care of the children, but can be supported by household tasks such as vacuuming, loading the dishwasher and doing laundry. This is about 30 hours a week. The rest of the time you can explore the country, hang out with friends or meet the perfect Dutch lover! 

How many days off do you have as an au pair?

Au pairs in the Netherlands are entitled to two full days off per week. These days don’t need to be consecutive. However, we recommend host families give their au pair at least one full weekend off per month.

What are the rules regarding holidays or public holidays for au pairs?

There are no official regulations regarding public holidays for au pairs. We do recommend that au pairs have a day off on public holidays, so they can experience the Dutch culture fully.

Do you need to register as an au pair in the Netherlands?

Yes. The steps differ for au pairs from a non EU country or a EU country.

Step 3: Au pair registers with the local town council
