Most asked questions about becoming an au pair in UK

What are the rules to become an au pair in the UK?
  • You are between 18-30 years old;
  • You are unmarried and have no children;
  • You have enough money to pay for your visa and plane ticket;
  • You have at least an intermediate school certificate;
  • You have a clear criminal record.

Additional rules apply to non-European au pairs,

  • You have at least £2,530 in savings and can prove this;
  • You sign an au pair contract;
  • You take a TB test if applicable.
Do you need to speak English in order to become an au pair in the UK?

Au pairs in the UK must have at least a basic level of English at the start of their au pair journey. During their stay, they should take English classes in their local area to improve their skills and learn more about British culture.

What do you earn as an au pair in the UK?

As an au pair, you live with your host family and are entitled to a minimum of £70 per week in pocket money. We typically recommend host families give £90 per week in pocket money and closer to £120 for au pairs in London. You get board and lodging for free. Au pairs can work up to 30 hours a week in the UK with two nights of babysitting per week included in the 30 hours.

What are your au pair responsibilities?

The work of an au pair in the UK mainly consists of taking care of the children but can be supported by household tasks such as vacuuming, loading the dishwasher, and doing laundry. All responsibilities of the au pair should fall under the maximum of 30 hours a week. The rest of the time you can explore the country, hang out with friends, or do some hobbies!

How many days off do you have as an au pair?

An au pair is entitled to at least 2 full days off per week and at least once a month their day off has to be a Sunday. There is no specific obligation for holiday time for au pairs, but we recommend 4 weeks of holiday for a 12 month stay plus public holidays off. This is one of the best ways to learn about British culture!

Who can au pair in the UK?

Due to Brexit, the nationalities of the young people that can au pair in the UK has become quite limited. Au pairs from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Monaco, San Marino, Iceland, and British overseas territories are eligible under the Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme.

Au pairs from Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, and Japan can become eligible through their government ballot systems. British nationals can also au pair within the UK to explore a different country than their own. More information on eligibility and visas can be found on our UK blog post.
