So, you live in Norway and want to host an au pair? What are the requirements for becoming a host family in Norway? What does the process consist of? In short, how do you become a host family in Norway?

Requirements for the host family

These are the requirements for becoming a host family in Norway:

  • At least one or more children under the age of 18 live in your home
  • You do not have the same nationality as the au pair
  • The family language is Norwegian
  • You meet the minimum income requirements
  • Your au pair should take care of your children and do light housework

Contract

Au pairs and Norwegian host families must sign an au pair contract with the specifics of their agreement, such as working hours, schedule, holidays, pocket money, and other rules.

Minimum and maximum stay

Au pairs in Norway can stay in the country for up to two years. The residence permit for EU and non-EU au pairs is only valid for the length of employment within the 2-year stay, During this time, the au pairs can leave and enter Norway freely.

Earnings

As a host family in Norway, you will pay your au pair 5,900 Norwegian Krones (NOK) monthly, which equates to approximately 569 EUR. Au pairs receive their pocket money also during holidays and when they fall ill. Au pairs are subject to taxes on their monthly pocket money.

Language course

Au pairs should attend a Norwegian language course during their stay. Host parents are responsible for paying for this course including the associated materials and travel costs. By law, the host parents should pay a minimum of 9,850 NOK toward the course.

Amount of working hours

Au pairs in Norway can work a maximum of 30 hours per week with a maximum of 5 hours per day. Au pairs cannot work more than 30 hours a week even for more pocket money.

Days off and holidays

Au pairs in Norway should have at least one day off per week and once a month this day should be a Sunday. They are also entitled to one afternoon off per week and should have enough free time to take a language course and engage in cultural activities.

According to Norwegian law, au pairs should get 25 days off per year even if they haven’t spent the entire year with the family. During their holidays, they should still be paid their regular pocket money. 

Au pair insurance
