Based on the thought of joining a cultural exchange, an au pair is generally entitled to free board and lodging in exchange for doing childcare and light housework. On top of this, they usually receive pocket money, to enable them to get to know the culture and language of their host country.
Every country has its own au pair regulations. You can find a detailed look at your favorite host country
here and select the country you are interested in. As an example, in the Netherlands, your pocket money will be between €300 and €340 per month, whereas in Germany it is €280 and in Belgium a minimum of €450.
Of course, you will also get spare time every week, with varies per country between one to multiple days, often also including guaranteed evenings off. Most countries also have a minimum time for paid holidays, which is around two weeks (e.g. Netherlands) or even more (e.g. Germany), if you are staying as au pair for the full year.
Since most countries also have specific rules on how many hours per week the au pair can work, it is important to arrange a weekly working schedule with the host family before the au pair starts, including working hours per day and what tasks should be performed.
