Luxembourg, known as the “Green Heart of Europe,” is a small yet captivating country nestled between Belgium, France, and Germany. With its rich history and charming landscapes, Luxembourg is an ideal destination for au pairs who seek a unique and affordable experience.
Accommodation
Luxembourg offers a wide range of accommodation options. There are many budget-friendly hostels or guesthouses in cities like Luxembourg City or Esch-sur-Alzette and in smaller towns outside the capital. In my case, I was lucky enough to be hosted by a fellow au pair living there which can be similar to Couchsurfing, where locals provide free accommodation to travelers.
Transportation
Getting around Luxembourg on a budget is convenient and efficient. The public transportation system is well-developed and FREE since 2020. For shorter distances, like in the Netherlands, I would recommend renting a bike as it is a great way to explore the country’s landscapes (plus you will have a lot of training from your cycling in the Netherlands!)
Food and dining
Look for local cafes and bistros that offer affordable lunch menus or opt for street food like gromperekichelcher (potato fritters) or a traditional wurst (sausage). Visit local markets and grocery stores to pick up fresh produce and local specialties for a budget-friendly picnic or a self-prepared meal. If it gets too hot, you can also find local organic ice cream on the stands of the main streets.
Place to explore
Luxembourg City, the country’s capital, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers a blend of old-world charm and modern attractions. Many museums in Luxembourg City offer discounted or free entry, so take advantage of these opportunities to learn about the country’s history and culture.
Don’t miss the Grund, with its narrow streets and stunning views of the city. It is located at the foot of the city’s ancient fortifications and is known for its charming cobblestone streets and traditional architecture. The Grund’s unique setting creates a distinct atmosphere, offering visitors a delightful blend of culture and visual delights.
Vianden is a captivating town surrounded by lush forests and rolling hills. It is renowned for its well-preserved medieval castle, the Chateau de Vianden, which stands proudly atop a hill. The castle, with its towers, grand courtyards, and intricate architecture, is proof of the town’s rich history. While walking through the charming streets of Vianden, you will find a charming array of traditional houses, quaint shops, and cozy cafes.
